Are you a skimmer?  I’m a skimmer.  To some extent I’ve become a product of my generation where cursing the web for specific information is where I do most of my reading.  Don’t get me wrong!  I do nestle into old editions of the New Yorker, parenting books, and sometimes I even finish some “fun reading” but this regrettably has been reserved for holidays and vacations.  Most days, I skim.

I take some pride in the fact that I have turned the art of skimming to a profitable skill!  When I format content for our website, flyers, and advertisements I steady myself in front of my computer like Dirty Harry in a shoot-out.  “Okay, content.  Make my day.”  And it does.  I start crafting bold text and white space.  Text styles such as headings, fonts, and colors neatly create order out of chaos as they organize the hierarchy of information.  I love bullet-ed lists because they break up the words, help the reader organize thoughts, and create an easy point of reference.

If you’re skimming this post what you really need to know is this:

  • Taking pictures is easy
  • St. John’s wants to be authentic in the pictures they use
  • Take pictures
  • Send them to us

Communications Coordinator, Amy Simons, with her camera phone.

(Perhaps I made that point too well?  For anyone still reading I promise if I can’t keep it short I’ll try to keep it interesting…)

The shinning star of every product is the picture!  It is absolutely worth 1000 words.

But are they the right words?

St. John’s has made a commitment that whenever possible we drop the stock photography and show you what’s really going on.  We use pictures of people.  Pictures of our people.  Pictures of our people doing what they do best… making a difference at in the community.  There’s no question that we strive to be conscious and respectful of everyone’s privacy.  But we also want to be authentic.  And we want to share the gifts we have with everyone out there that’s skimming for something genuine.

You can be a part of sharing that gift!  Between the ease of digital cameras and the convenience of smart phones the opportunity for pictures has never been more plentiful!  The next time you are at a fellowship event or participating in an outreach ministry take a few shots then pass them along to our office!  Together we can create a mosaic of testimony that expresses our shared lives here at St. John’s.

What to Do:

  1. Keep you camera handy
  2. Photograph how YOU make a difference at St. John’s
  3. Send your shots to the office… we’ll do the rest!
