Music at St. John's
Music Ministry
Music is a critical part of community life at St. John’s. Through our
hymns, service music and anthems, we seek a closer relationship with
Almighty God.
St. John’s worships with music in the
mainstream of the Anglican tradition. Hymns and service music are drawn
primarily from The Hymnal 1982, and the anthems of the choir
represent the best of the Anglican parish and cathedral traditions.
Singing is supported by our recently renovated Casavant pipe organ as
well as many guest instrumentalists throughout the year including
frequent contributions from musicians within the parish.
The Choir of St. John’s is a
multi-generational group of people who gather weekly for community,
learning, formation and singing. Membership in the choir is open to
anyone in grade 6 and older. The ministry of our volunteers is
supported by several Choral Scholars who are music students at local
universities. The students help to support the singing and are learning
the ins-and-outs of choral direction and music ministry. The choir
sings Choral Evensong several times a year and also presents major works
in the context of worship. Recent works have included Eleanor Daley’s
Missa Brevis No. 4, the Glorias of Antonio Vivaldi and
Luigi Boccherini and the Missa Brevis in D Major of Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart. For information about joining the choir, contact Kevin
Simons, Director of Music and Organist at

In addition to Sunday mornings, St.
John’s has developed an innovative program called “First Sundays at St.
John’s”. This is a series of worship services and concerts that take
place on the first Sunday of each month at 4:00 from October-May. These
events are always followed by a reception, usually featuring sherry and
cheese. For more information about our series, click:
